About the SPUC White Flower Appeal
Our main battle at the present time is against proposals announced by the Prime Minister in autumn 2011 to legislate for same sex marriage. Probably proposals will be introduced into Parliament early in 2013.
The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have declared their total opposition to the legislation. So have the two established churches in England, Wales and Scotland, the Church of England and the Church of Scotland. There is massive opposition to these proposals from many faith groups and people of goodwill.
The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has argued that marriage is a Stone Age institution — well it is, as it goes back to before recorded history. Archbishop Nichols of Westminster, speaking in November 2012, said that “marriage is a very important building block in society and it is very foolish to alter that”. And it is not just a question of seeking exemption for the churches. This is about protecting unborn babies.
Marriage is understood to be between one man and one woman, with the possibility of children. This has been a consistent factor in all human society, no matter what governments come and go. Statistics tell us that 80 per cent of all abortions in England and Wales are carried out on unmarried women and this is telling us quite clearly that, as an institution, marriage is the greatest defender of unborn children, and that’s why SPUC is fighting tooth and nail to oppose these proposals.
